It’s already that time again, fall weather is here, and it feels like winter is already knocking.   With many people still working on repairs caused by the previous winter weather, now is the time to start thinking about how to prepare your home for what’s to come this year.  Many weather predictions including the Farmers Almanac, are predicting that this winter will be equal, and possibly even more extreme than the last.   Here are a few tips that you can do now, to get your home prepped for another harsh winter.

  1. GET YOUR HOME INSPECTED – ok, we’re a bit biased with this tip, but it truly is a smart recommendation.  A complete full home inspection will bring to light anything that might cause headaches later on.  We’ll check the roof, pipes, insulation, many dozens of other individual items that are vital to keeping your home safe and comfortable during the winter.  It’s better to identify problems now while there is still time to fix or address any problems without fighting the snow and ice.
  2. CLEAN YOUR GUTTERS – Everyone remembers the havoc that the ice dams cause to homes last winter.  Dirty or clogged gutters facilitate the formation of ice dams, so a simple cleaning could make a big difference.
  3. FOUNDATION VENTS – Close and insulate any foundation vents, especially where water lines are near, to prevent freezing.
  4. REPLACE FURNACE FILTERS – Clean filters keep your furnace running smoothly, and efficiently.
  5. REVERSE CEILING FAN DIRECTION –  By setting fan blades to move clockwise in winter, it will lift cool air to the ceiling and push heated air down where you can enjoy it.
